Quick answer: Door County is about 2.5 hours from Milwaukee and 4 hours from Chicago, measured to Sturgeon Bay. There’s no train or direct bus, so the easiest way to skip the long drive is to fly into Green Bay (GRB), about 45 minutes away, and take a car from there. On the peninsula you’ll need a car to get between villages. For groups and weddings, a Sprinter keeps everyone together.

Where Door County is

Door County is the peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan in northeast Wisconsin, with more than 300 miles of shoreline. Sturgeon Bay is the gateway, and the villages of Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay line the bay side to the north. Approximate drive times to Sturgeon Bay, from mapping estimates:

FromAbout how farAbout how long
Green Bay airport (GRB)45 milesAbout 45 minutes
Milwaukee150 milesAbout 2.5 hours
Madison180 milesAbout 3 hours
Chicago240 milesAbout 4 hours

Add another 30 to 45 minutes to reach Fish Creek or Sister Bay.

Getting there without driving the whole way

There’s no train to Door County, and no direct bus. The practical way to skip the long drive is to fly into Green Bay’s Austin Straubel airport (GRB), which has direct flights on several airlines, then take a car the last 45 minutes or so. From Chicago, some travelers take the train or bus as far as Milwaukee and switch to a car there. A one-way ride also works: get dropped off for the week and have a ride home booked for the end of the trip.

Getting around the peninsula

Once you’re there, a car is the only practical way to get between villages. The roads are two-lane and slow in summer and fall. Bikes work well inside the state parks and on Washington Island, which you reach by ferry from Northport Pier at the tip of the peninsula. Door County has five state parks: Peninsula, Potawatomi, Whitefish Dunes, Newport and Rock Island.

Groups, weddings and winery tours

Door County draws wedding parties, family reunions, girls’ weekends and winery tours. For groups, one Sprinter from the airport or from Milwaukee keeps everyone together, and an hourly booking can cover a day of tastings with no one stuck driving. Price is per vehicle, so it drops per person as the group grows. See which vehicle fits your group.

For trips across the state, Wisconsin Limo Service, operated by Milwaukee-based Pharaoh’s Transportation, runs long-distance and airport rides. See its Green Bay airport car service or, if you fly into Chicago, its Milwaukee to O’Hare car service. Whoever you book, check that the company is licensed and insured.
