Where Kohler is
Kohler, Wisconsin is a small village just west of Sheboygan, about two-thirds of a mile off I-43 along Lake Michigan. It’s home to The American Club resort, the Inn on Woodlake, Kohler Waters Spa and four Pete Dye championship golf courses. Distances below are from the resort, with the O’Hare time a mapping estimate:
| From | About how far | About how long |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee or MKE | 55 miles | About 1 hour |
| Green Bay or GRB | 60 miles | About 1 hour |
| Chicago | 150 miles | About 2 hours, longer in traffic |
| O’Hare (ORD) | About 140 miles | About 2.5 hours |
Getting there from O’Hare, MKE and Chicago
From MKE: Milwaukee Mitchell is the easiest airport, about an hour south on I-43. The resort says transportation can be arranged from both MKE and Green Bay. From O’Hare: many out-of-state guests find better fares at O’Hare, but the drive north runs about 2.5 hours, through Illinois tolls and Milwaukee traffic. From Chicago: I-94 to Milwaukee, then I-43 north; Friday afternoons are slow. There’s no train or direct bus to Kohler, so most guests drive or book a ride.
Golf weekends at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run
Kohler’s two golf venues are a short drive apart. Whistling Straits, on the lake north of Sheboygan, hosted the PGA Championship in 2004, 2010 and 2015 and the Ryder Cup in 2021. Blackwolf Run, in the village, hosted the U.S. Women’s Open in 1998 and 2012. A golf group with clubs and bags fits best in an SUV or a Sprinter, and one vehicle can run the group between the courses, the resort and dinner. See which vehicle fits your group.
Spa weekends, weddings and retreats
Kohler Waters Spa makes the village a common couples’ and girls’ weekend. The resort also hosts weddings and corporate retreats, where guests fly in at different times. The American Club’s resort fee includes a shuttle and valet parking, so once you arrive, a car isn’t always needed. Getting there is the hard part, especially from O’Hare.
For trips across the state, Wisconsin Limo Service, operated by Milwaukee-based Pharaoh’s Transportation, runs airport rides to and from Kohler. See its MKE airport car service or Milwaukee to O’Hare car service. Whoever you book, check that the company is licensed and insured.
